CVS jumps on the CBD train.
The gigantic US chain of pharmacies announced that it would sell CBD-based products in 800 stores in eight US states: Alabama, California, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee and Maryland.
"We are distributing CBD products derived from hemp in some states to meet consumer demand for alternative care," said Mike DeAngelis, spokesman for CVS.
Cannabinoid derived from psychoactive but non-intoxicating cannabis, CBD has been legal since the end of last year, when the federal law on agriculture was adopted, allowing the addition of the compound to topical and cosmetic products as hemp derivatives. .
The pharmacy will add balms, ointments, creams, sprays and CBD-based ointments to its inventory in what CVS describes as an "alternative source of relief" for consumers.
CNBC reports that the CVS indicates that claims of effectiveness will "vary from one product to another", but that the pharmacy does not intend to market products infused with CBD as a "panacea".
"We will be walking slowly, but we think our customers will be looking for it," said CVS Health CEO Larry Merlo in an interview this week.
Despite the popularity and buzz around the CBD, US companies are limited as to which products can be infused with the compound; The addition of CBD-based foods and beverages is still banned at the federal level by the Food and Drug Administration.
