TORONTO – WestJet Airlines plans to continue shipping Boeing 737 Max aircraft once regulators have approved the aircraft for re-commissioning.
Calgary-based airline says it does not follow the lead of the Indonesian national carrier, which has canceled its 49 billion dollar order for 49 Max 8 jet planes, citing a loss of confidence after two deadly collisions in the last six month.
WestJet was expecting to add two more aircraft this year to bring its fleet to 13 planes, but Boeing has suspended all future deliveries.
Spokeswoman Lauren Stewart said the remaining 37 deliveries in her order would not be made until the grounding was lifted and he was evaluating all the upgrades in detail.
She said that narrow-body aircraft remained "a vital part of the fleet" after behaving "safely, reliably and efficiently" since 2017.
Air Canada and Sunwing did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
