The former goalkeeper of Fiorentina, Parma and France, Sébastien Frey, revealed that he was "weakened" by a serious virus that "could have brought me".
"I was hospitalized urgently with a fever of 40 degrees and it was not going down," he wrote on Instagram.
"They found a virus that has completely weakened me and that could have left me far from you all."
The 39-year-old, who played for the last time at Turkish club Bursaspor's high-profile football in 2015, won two French team selections.
"Luck would have me succeed in this test, I'll get back on my feet like I've always done," he added.
"I have always played to win and now, with determination and strength, I will also win this battle."
Frey began his career in Cannes, before playing for Inter Milan, Verona, Parma, Fiorentina and Genoa in Italy.
Throughout his career, he was linked to a move to the Premier League, repeatedly claiming that Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal wanted to sign it.
