John Terry was the last defenseman to be crowned player of the year, but Hamann thinks Van Dijk is about to claim the prize.
Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann has named Reds defender Virgil van Dijk as PFA Player of the Year this season.
Van Dijk was instrumental in helping Liverpool take the challenge of the Premier League title.
Van Dijk arrived in Anfield in January 2018 for 75 million pounds sterling
They are currently leading the standings two points ahead of Manchester City, another former Hamann club, although the Citizens have one game less.
Hamann does not think the Yearlong Contest will be as tight and thinks the Dutchman will become the first defenseman to win the award since John Terry in 2005.
He also thinks City star Raheem Sterling should be second.
Hamann said: "Virgil van Dijk looks at the player of the year in the PFA team, even if it is a trophy in which the defenders have not always managed to behave well.

Van Dijk arrived in Anfield for £ 75 million in January 2018, representing a record transfer fee for a defender.
Van Dijk made Liverpool solid on defense
The 27-year-old turned Liverpool's fortunes into the back. The Reds have kept 17 white sheets out of a total of 31 in the championship this season.
And Hamann said these improvements were due to Van Dijk's leadership and skills.
He added: "Liverpool is lucky to have it because it's a manager's dream.
