In a shock interview, Dickie Arbiter suggested that the event was "an American thing" and not something that is usually celebrated by the royal family. Mr. Arbiter told the weekly US Weekly: "Birthdays, it's really an American affair." He added: "We do not do it here in the UK".

The Duchess of Susbad had crossed the Atlantic in New York last month to celebrate the arrival of her first child with Prince Harry.

It is also understood that the Duchess made the trip via a private jet of George and Amal Clooney.

However, the former head of Buckingham Palace suggested that the use of the aircraft was not the smartest idea for a royal.

Mr. Arbiter added, "It was a bit of an exaggeration in terms of spending and how it got there."

He added: "Meghan is American and she does things the American way."

Many of Meghan's famous friends attended the event in the penthouse suite of The Mark's exclusive hotel, which costs £ 57,000 ($ 75,000) a night.

Tennis star Serena Williams, former Meghans co-star Abigail Spencer, stylist Jessica Mulroney and Amal Clooney were among the guests at the bash.

Meghan makeup artist Daniel Martin said the baby shower was like a royal wedding meeting.

He told People magazine: "It was exactly what she needed and it was a meeting for all of us, who had not seen each other since the wedding."

Meghan is expected to give birth next month and should not make other visits or take place in other engagements.

However, her maternity leave has not yet been officially confirmed by the Kensington Palace.
