Honda unveils electric version of CRF450 dirt bike and new electric scooter

Honda participated yesterday at the Tokyo Motorcycle Show to present its latest work on electric vehicles. The company unveiled two models, a CR Electric electric bike and a Benly Electric urban scooter.

For such power in motorsport, Honda has not made as much progress on the front of two-wheeled electric vehicles as one might expect.

However, this trend could change thanks to two new Honda EV models that have just debuted at the Tokyo Motorcycle Show.

Honda now presents prototypes of electric motorcycles and electric scooters.

Honda CR All Terrain Electric Bike

Honda's new CR Electric motocross prototype seems to share the same frame as the Honda CRF450. The bike also sports the same Showa reverse suspension fork and off-road tires as the standard CRF range.

Unlike standard CRF bicycles, this prototype is 100% electric.

The twin-spar aluminum frame that has defined Honda's CRF off-road motorcycle range now supports an electric motor instead of the standard ICE engine.

Honda ignores the details and does not share the power numbers yet. We can not say for sure how much kW this engine is capable of.

The engine is not a Honda part either. It was developed by Mugen – a company with which Honda has worked in the past. Mugen is perhaps best known for the Shinden electric race bikes that face off in the electric races of the Isle of Man.

Honda unveils the Benly electric scooter

The other big Honda unveiling in Tokyo was an electric version of the Benly delivery scooter. Normally found with a 110cc engine, this one also has an electric motor exchange.

It is powered by the same batteries that Honda uses in its largest maxi PCX electric scooter. The batteries are designed to be replaced – an important feature for an electric scooter.

Thanks to the exchangeable batteries, the operator can run the scooters almost indefinitely without having to go to a service station. Battery exchange stations or even individual spare batteries on individual chargers in the delivery depot can be used to put the scooters back on the street with new batteries.

Honda was just as discreet with the details about the electric Benly as it was about the CR Electric. However, the company seems determined to put the two models into production and qualified the models of prototypes rather than concepts.

Electrek's Take

Finally.

Jeez. I took you long enough, Honda.

Honestly, I can not believe that Honda has waited so long to deploy real two-wheeled electric vehicles. Of course, they had the Honda PCX electric scooter, but they produce these things more slowly than molbades and you can not even buy them in almost every market – the few hundreds of existing units (there are some). There are more than 100? are mainly available for rent in only a few selected locations.

It's almost as if Honda was afraid to give us motorcycles or electric scooters.

I do not think we'll see these two models in a Honda showroom this season, but it shows at least progress, which is a good sign.
