The government has approved the recruitment of 1,000 people to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) this year to increase its workforce.
Interior Minister Ambrose Dery, who announced on Friday, said the initiative was intended to ensure that the service has the human resources to maintain fire safety at all levels.
"This will improve the firefighter / citizen ratio from 1 to 4,303 (1: 4303), which is currently unacceptable by the United Nations standard of 1: 800," he said.

He was speaking at the Recruitment Course parade at the Fire Academy and Training School (FATS) in Accra.

The graduation parade saw 398 recruits faint, including 299 men and 99 women driven by drills, manipulation of equipment, practical attachment and other nuances of fighting l & # 39; fire.
The graduation of recruits brings the number of GNFS staff to 7,900.

Mr. Dery announced that the government had approved the acquisition of two hydraulic platforms that would help the GNFS to access high-rise buildings exceeding 15 storeys.

Dery said the government is also committed to providing the GNFS with modern fire fighting equipment to provide a service comparable to that of its counterparts in developed countries.

Regarding the well-being of staff, Mr. Dery said the government would continue to pay rent allowances to service staff to meet their housing needs.
He added that the Ministry of the Interior was working with the GNFS Council to explore ways in which the service could increase its internally generated funds (IGF) and retain some of it.

Mr. Dery urged GNFS staff to be diligent and to badume his responsibilities as it is through discipline that he could fulfill his mandate to the public.
He asked service staff to strengthen their engagement with the public and to educate people to understand how they work.
"We do not want to continue to have situations where members of the public will continue to say that service personnel go to the scene of the fire without water, so work to gain the trust of people," he said.
He also urged newly recruited staff to be disciplined and to respect the professional standards of the service in the performance of their duties.
