WASHINGTON, March 23 (Xinhua) – A study has shown that young women are more likely to experience sleep problems in the days leading up to their menstruation.

The study presented Saturday at an annual meeting of the Endocrine Society in the United States in New Orleans showed that the menstrual phase could affect sleep efficiency, waking up after bedtime and the number of wakes per night .

"Sleep is more disturbed several days just before the menses in young, healthy women," said Anne E. Kim, a medical student at Case Western Reserve University, who led the study.

According to the study, the sleep efficiency decreased by 3.3% compared to the early follicular phase, that of WASO by 15 minutes and the number of awakenings per night increased by three at the end of the luteal phase.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, in the United States, 25% to 33% of menses reported more disturbed sleep disturbances in the weeks before and / or during menstruation.

The researchers collected daily sleep data from 10 healthy women ages 18-28 who had regular menstrual cycles. They wore wrist sensors to record sleep regimens on 578 episodes of sleep and provided morning urine samples for hormonal badysis.

The researchers said these effects could be mediated by dynamic changes in ovarian hormones during the menstrual cycle.

The study found that the hormone called E1G was linked to more arousals, and that another hormone called PDG was badociated with a tendency to a higher index of sleep fragmentation.

"These findings suggest that women need to be particularly aware of the need to practice good sleep hygiene the week before the menses and reduce their caloric intake," said Kim.
