A medication for postpartum depression has been approved by the FDA for the first time. Postpartum depression, a health problem sometimes called baby blues, is a mental health problem that affects many new mothers.

Zulresso is an antidepressant containing the drug brexanolone. which is administered by a continuous intravenous infusion of 60 hours. The FDA says clinical trials have shown that Zulresso can treat the symptoms of postpartum depression within hours.

Postpartum depression affects about 1 in 9 women in the United States and causes symptoms of postpartum depression such as sadness, anxiety and exhaustion. Patients treated with Zulresso had positive effects during the first 24 hours of use and 30 days after the initial IV injection.

The drug is new because it contains a synthetic hormone that increases in the woman's body during pregnancy, then decreases after birth. Zulresso would cost about $ 34,000 per patient for average treatment, and a bottle of Zulresso would cost $ 7,450.
