Voters from the three islands of the Indian Ocean choose their president

Presidential elections are taking place in Comoros for the first time since a referendum to increase the term of office.

Previously, the presidency turned every five years around the three islands of the Indian Ocean – a system put in place to stop repeated beating.

Thanks to the result of the referendum, President Azali Assoumani can stand again.

He runs against 12 opponents, but should win.

The Supreme Court has ruled out some of its rivals, including former president Ahmed Abdallah Sambi, accused of corruption.

The opposition reported irregularities during Sunday's vote.

A dozen polling stations were ransacked on the island of Anjouan, told AFP an official of the electoral commission.

Witnesses told AFP that the polling stations had been attacked after people had found filled urns.

Last year, violent protests took place when the referendum ended the five-year power-rotation system between the three main islands of the archipelago.

This arrangement was put in place to promote stability in a country that has had more than 20 coup attempts since independence in 1975.

Now presidents can run for two terms.

If there is no obvious winner, a second round will take place on April 21st.
