MILAN: Juventus Women drew a crowd of 39,000 spectators, a record for a women's football match in Italy, when it played for the first time at the Allianz stadium of the Turin club on Sunday, March 24.

The crowd, almost three times higher than the previous record of 14,000 set in 2008, saw Juventus beat Fiorentina, second, 1-0, thanks to a late goal by Sofie Junge Pedersen, who would give it the title.

Tickets were free although they had to be booked in advance.

Juventus, the defending champion, has four points ahead of the 12 teams with three games to play.

A women's A series was created in Italy in 1968, but it has been placed under the control of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) only this season.

"Taking the lead and imposing yourself in front of all these people is moving," said Juventus coach Rita Guarino.

"I look back and think of all the people who fought with me for this sport to be more and more appreciated and followed: it was really an important day."

Juventus made their Serie A debut last season and won the first time title.
