FDA boss asks supermarkets to promote locally made products

Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) CEO Delese Darko, who recently launched "Buy Ghana Love Ghana" at Koala supermarket here in Accra, challenged other retail stores to do the same.

Customers will likely see special shelves loaded with locally made foods, cosmetics, household chemicals such as detergents, handwashing liquid and dishes, and medical devices such as sanitary napkins.

In an address to the press, she revealed that this initiative came from a meeting with President Nana Akufo-Addo, during which he had pointed out that emerging global markets, such as Turkey, India and China, became big consumers.

She shared her experience of India during an inspection visit and she was envious to see trucks carrying raw materials into companies and other people moving with finished products.

"It meant that as a country, if we want to be big and reach what they are as a country, we have to use our own products. That's why we followed the President's advice and put this initiative in place where we ask retailers to give local products the importance they deserve.

"We approached some supermarkets that started the Buy Ghana, Love Ghana initiative to sell them the idea," he said.

According to her, the Authority is about to speed up the registration of locally manufactured products to meet international standards and will spare no effort to achieve this.

The FDA has set up special units dedicated to the registration of locally manufactured products and an "industrial badistance service that manages the industry".

"So, if you come on startup, we have a department specifically created to train you and help bring your industry to the point where you can produce products worthy of the international market," she added.

She thinks it will facilitate admission to global outlets, both at home and abroad.

Ms. Darko urged manufacturing companies and local start-ups to take advantage and register their products so that they can compete in the marketplace.
