Ablakwa Education Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa is Member of Parliament for North Tongu

The minority Parliament in Ghana condemned the Akufo-Addo administration for the manner in which the kidnapping of a 39-year-old Lebanese businessman in Ghana was carried out.

In a statement, opposition MPs demanded that the government act responsibly, as is expected of democratic states, by breaking with its "useless silence" on kidnapping and disappearing from Mahran Mustapha Baajour.

The statement, signed by the North-Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, said: "Mahran Mustapha Baajour, 39, is a Lebanese businessman of Palestinian origin who arrived in Ghana. from Lebanon for a working visit on December 13, 2018. seen in public.

"The minority is informed that immediately after arriving at the Kotoka International Airport on December 13, 2018, Mahran Mustapha Baajour and his two Ghanaian hosts who greeted him at the airport were arrested in the airport enclosure as they were leaving in their Toyota car bearing registration number GN 6126 – 15, by people claiming to be agents of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI).

"After the three men were detained for six days in violation of Ghanaian law, we believe that the two hosts of Mahran, one Razak Abdul and another, were later released as free men while that Mahran was kept in detention. This is the reason why Mahran's family and officials in his country have trouble believing the denials and innocence demands of Ghanaian government officials that they have contacted. "

He added: "This heinous violation of human rights is causing considerable discomfort in diplomatic circles, the image of Ghana as a stable democratic state, respectful of human rights and respecting the rule of law.

"The kidnapping of three-month-old Mahran Mustapha Baajour has already led to major protests in Beirut, Lebanon, where petitions have been presented to the president of the nation and the speaker of their parliament.

"Our surveillance of the international media, including Al-Jazeera, which has already broadcast two reports on this subject, confirms that another petition calling for the release of Mahran to the Ghanaian government was presented to our consular agent in Lebanon, where another event was organized. with protesters carrying banners on which was written: "Mahran is in your prisons".

"The minority, which continues to follow this case with keen interest, has learned new information pointing to escalating protests by Lebanese nationals and human rights defenders around the world against the Ghanaian government. Indeed, protests were to take place at the Ghana Embbady in Washington, DC in the United States of America later this week. There is no doubt that this worrying development augurs badly for the image of Ghana within nations. We must also be aware of the consequences of this kidnapping case, especially for our peacekeepers in Lebanon, if the issue continues to be treated in such a catastrophic manner.

"Despite the many behind-the-scenes interventions of the minority, urging the government to publicly declare its claimed innocence and to be seen as clearly working to solve the mystery. the continued silence of the government led by Akufo-Addo for more than three months, even in front of several reports of the local and international press as the situation degenerates and the anxiety goes up to fever [levels], is the most reckless and unacceptable, to say the least.

"This uninteresting conduct of the current government is unfortunately fueling many suspicions, even as our international image continues to sink into chaos since the unresolved badbadination of underground journalist Ahmed Hussein-Suale and the outrageous and bloody Ayawaso West Wuogon's – elections, both of which sparked widespread international condemnation.

"The minority therefore demands that the Akufo-Addo administration, responsible for the territorial security of Ghana and held responsible by the growing number of protesters, take urgent measures to ensure the family of Mahran Mustapha Baajour – who, we sadly, lost his mother last week, the Lebanese people and the entire international community – Ghana will not sink into a state of anarchy or will it become a refuge for human rights violations. Man perpetrated by faceless persons acting on behalf of the state. "
