Ernest Asante Ernest Asante debuts with the Black Stars against Kenya

There were two beginners on Saturday as Ghana beat the Harambee Stars of Kenya at the Accra Sports Stadium in the final qualifiers of CAN Group 2019.

Ironically, the two players, namely Caleb Ansah Ekuban of Trabzonspor, Turkey, and Al Jazira winger Ernest Asante, belong to the category of players who made their first appearance in the senior national team at old age.

Sports writer Edmund Okai Gyimah introduces the five oldest players to appear on the Black Stars.

1. Ernest Asante 30 years old 38 days

Al Jazeera winger, Ernest Asante, is officially the top five of the oldest players to debut at the Black Stars.

The mercurial winger nods to Accra's sports stadium when he replaced Jordan Ayew in the 75th minute. Asante, much younger, was arguably the best African player in Scandinavia, but with all that, he was never considered by Black Stars. Who knows? the coaches of the Black Stars might have seen something different now.

2. Lloyd Owusu – 29 years old, 230 days old

Just months after his 30th birthday, striker Lloyd Owusu made his debut in the Black Stars. It was a trial match against German Stuttgart on April 26, 2006. Owusu was then playing for Brentford.

He ruptured the left knee ligaments, which eventually pulled him out of the pack.

3. Junior Agogo Manual – 26 years, 289 days

Although a very late developer, Agogo has become a household name in Ghana after breathtaking performances in the colors of the Black Stars.

The shaven and voluminous Agogo is a typical English forward, solid, forceful, goal-seeking and able to face defenders.
He made his Black Stars debut against French team OJ Nice on May 17, 2006, but he could not replace the Black Stars team for the global attraction. The striker became an integral part of the team after the World Cup.

4. Derek Asamoah – 25 years old, 262 days old

The retired striker was part of the Black Stars after his exploits at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

Asamoah was among the many new players invited by the Black Stars technical team for friendly matches in the Far East. The former striker from Shrewsbury Town and OJ Nice made his friendly debut against Japan at Yokohama Stadium on October 4, 2006.

5. Caleb Ansah Ekuban 25 years old

The Ghanaian striker born in Villafranca Verona made his Ghanaian Black Stars debut against the Kenya Harambee Stars on his 25th birthday.
The ambidextrous attacker was introduced for the first time in Ghana on March 23, 2019, the exact day he celebrated his birthday.

Ekuban replaced the inefficient Emmanuel Boateng in the 60th minute and made an impact by scoring the winner for Ghana in the 88th minute.
