The National Road Safety Commission should lead all strategies and campaigns to reduce the growing number of road accidents on Ghana's roads.

This is the view of Nana Yaw Akwada, Public Safety Analyst and Executive Director of the Public Safety Bureau.

He added that although ensuring road safety requires concerted efforts from different stakeholders, the National Road Safety Commission in the case of Ghana must play a leading role in achieving the desired results.
In his remarks on Citi TV's The Point of View on Monday, Akwada expressed his enthusiasm for the government's plans to accelerate the process of making the Highway Safety Commission an authority to give more control and authority in the space.

"Around the world, road safety issues are managed through collaboration with different stakeholders or government agencies. So we can not limit everything, but the question of who to lead is the National Road Safety Commission. "

The issue of the country's road safety took a prominent place in the national discourse after the deaths of at least 70 people Friday in two road accidents, including one that saw dozens of stranded pbadengers burned so immeasurable because of a fire.

Various proposals have been made, including calls for the duplication of all highways, the installation of speed inhibitors to prevent vehicles from moving beyond a certain speed and the use of speed dials. two drivers on journeys longer than 4 hours.

But Nana Yaw Akwada said the discussions and the various considerations made as a result of unfortunate incidents should not be limited to mere statements, but should be supported by measures and the implementation of the regulations.

"We are happy that they are now becoming an authority. What concerns me is that when such things happen, we start making all kinds of proposals before doing anything. We have to do some basic things.

He stressed that the country's roads would be safer if rules 163 and 125 of the Road Safety Act were respected.

"If the state can implement regulation 125 that deals with continuing education of drivers and regulation 163 that deals with speed, these two will be able to help us achieve the desired results," he said. he declared.
