Rank Roger, singer of The Beat and General Public, died tragically Tuesday at the age of 56.
The singer, whose real name was Roger Charlery, died peacefully at home and surrounded by his family, he said in a statement posted on the group's Twitter page.
In January, Roger was reported to have suffered a stroke during the summer, a surgery for two brain tumors and would also be taking treatment for lung cancer.

Born in Birmingham, England, the singer fell in love with punk rock from an early age, playing drums for the Nam Nam Boys.

In the late 1970s, he joined The Beat, pioneer of ska revival, alongside Dave Wakeling (vocals, guitar), Andy Cox (guitar), David Steele (bbad), Everett Morton (drums) and Saxa aka Lionel Augustus Martin (saxophone).
The group then recorded three discs, I Just Can not Stop It, Wha? Ppen? And Special Beat Service, before separating in 1983.
From the beginning, the beat set its own tempo by incorporating more reggae into its sound, as well as the original and politically tinged lyrics of singer Dave Wakeling.

Roger was a mix of toast and hypeman, dancing energetically on the stage, playing percussion and driving the crowd with his largely imitated toasts / raps during the songs.
After their separation, Roger and Wakeling form the group General Public with the keyboard Mickey Billingham, the guitarist Mick Jones (The Clash), the bbadist Horace Panter and the drummer Stoker.
Together they form a great band with his members of the punk, ska and mod scenes from the UK and release All The Rage (1984) and the album Hand To Mouth in 1986.
