According to sources, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Heart Association are now advocating a new tax on sweetened beverages.

In a joint statement, the two US health organizations called on lawmakers to regulate the prices of soft drinks and limit how they can be marketed. Another measure mentioned in the statement includes the introduction of healthier options in children's menus and vending machines across the country.

According to the organizations, an average child consumes 12 ounces of sugar a day while the recommended amounts do not exceed 8 ounces per week. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Heart Association aim to end the worrisome link between sugary drinks and type 2 diabetes and obesity.
