The former Manchester United boss backed the Reds as the best remaining team in the Champions League

Louis van Gaal says he believes Manchester City is better than Barcelona, but that Liverpool are better than both, as all three teams are looking for the title of the Champions League this season.

Liverpool are currently leading the Premier League with two points ahead of Manchester City, which retains a game less against its rivals in the title.

The English duo are also still alive in the Champions League, Liverpool having knocked out Bayern Munich in the round of 16 and Manchester City eliminating Schalke with ease.

And van Gaal says the two are better than one team that many consider to be the favorite to win the competition, Barcelona.

"People think Barcelona is the best but they are not, Manchester City and Liverpool are more of a team than Barcelona – and Liverpool are more of a team than City," he told the BBC.

"In my philosophy, the best team has to win but I hope for City because it plays the best football."

Van Gaal led Barcelona from 1997 to 2000 before returning to the club for another run from 2002-03.

During his stay in Catalonia, van Gaal has twice won La Liga, a Copa del Rey and a UEFA Super Cup.

Barcelona faces Manchester United's former van Gaal club in the next round and faces April 10 in England before the return leg in Spain six days later.

Van Gaal's last management position was his stay at Manchester United, a frustrating term that ended in 2016 just days after Van Gaal won the FA Cup.

Although he has not returned to the game since, van Gaal says he has had other offers, but he is also pleased with his current legacy.

"I have a philosophy, I was convinced and winning trophies in four countries, I proved that this philosophy worked," he said.

"But my legacy far exceeds my results, and I'm also a relationship coach, not only with my players, but with all the members of a club."

"It's not my image, but I'm very human in that sense, at Manchester United there were over 40 people in the performance department, the medical department, the fans, they all had a heart for I went to work as an badyst during a match in Liverpool and the United fans were still shouting my name.

"I'm proud that people still love me – it's what matters most in life."
