Athletic Bilbao hopes that Ander Herrera will insist on a return to the Basque side this summer, as questions continue to weigh on his long-term future at Manchester United.

Herrera, 29, is out of contract at Old Trafford this summer.

And until now, the Spanish midfielder has not been able to agree to an extension of his contract, which allowed him to leave for anything on 1 July.

Paris Saint-Germain is linked to Herrera, who arrived at United with a £ 29 million contract in 2014.

Will Herrera bid farewell to United?

Herrera recently talked about his future and is relaxed about the situation.

He told the Spanish media: "I focus on playing football in the remaining month and a half, the rest I leave to my agent, both the eventual renewal with United and his talking to another club for my departure. "

The former Herrera club however keeps an eye on a number of former players, including him, Spurs striker Fernando Llorente and Bayern Munich's Javi Martinez.

Athletics president, Aitor Elezegi, told AS that the door was open for the trio, but was asking everyone to show his willingness to return to San Mames.

"Each of these three players can play in the team," Elezegi said. "Athletic has the ability to carry out this type of transfer.

"I hope that Javi, Herrera or Llorente will want to make the effort, which would be generous."

Martinez, 30, has been badociated with a return of 17 million pounds sterling in his country, after a season where he was not always a regular on the first team under the orders of Bayern boss Niko Kovac .

Tottenham striker, Llorente, hinted in January that he would like to end his career with his former club, stating: "It would be nice to retire to Athletic."

Herrera, Martinez and Llorente all played key roles in the Athletic race in 2012 at the final of the Europa League under the orders of Marcelo Bielsa.
