Jonathan Bellis, 30, who represented the team at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, admitted to hitting his girlfriend at home on March 8 after the couple went out for a drink.

He left his victim "distraught" with wounds to the face, arms and ears, and a "pain all over his face and head", after telling him "I'm going to explode," said the court.

Bellis, who retired from professional cycling in 2015, does not remember having committed the badault, heard the Cheltenham Court of First Instance.

The cyclist from Cheltenham returned to the sport after suffering a brain injury in 2009, which left him in a coma for three weeks. He crashed a scooter into a wall in Tuscany.

The court heard that his injury had caused an badault when he had been drinking alcohol.

Prosecutors said the couple had gone to the Cheltenham brewery district for a drink with friends, before returning to the apartment.
