A Chilean judge seems ready to question a man suspected of killing a Japanese student in France in 2016.

Narumi Kurosaki, a student at the University of Tsukuba, was reported missing in December while she was participating in an exchange program in the city of Besançon, in eastern France.

French prosecutors have placed Chilean Nicolas Zepeda on a wanted list, suspected of killing Kurosaki, with whom he has already been released.

Zepeda has since returned to his country of origin. French prosecutors have asked the Chilean authorities to interrogate Zepeda in person.

The French authorities revealed Wednesday to the NHK that the Chilean side had agreed to cooperate.

A Chilean judge must question the man in the presence of French investigators next month.

The French side also hopes to obtain permission to question Zepeda.

French investigators interrupted Kurosaki's search last October.
