Federer has won nine of the last 11 games against Medvedev

Three-time champion Roger Federer has qualified for the quarter-finals of the Miami Open with a two-set victory over Russia's Daniil Medvedev.

The Swiss Federer, who won the title in 2017, beat the 13th seed 6-4 6-2 in an hour and a minute.

The fourth-seeded 37-year-old, who has struck 22 winners and won nine of the last 11 games, will face South African Kevin Anderson in the last eight games.

"I thought it was an interesting match," Federer said.

"There were very long exchanges, tactical points, big points were for me and that made the difference.

"I am very well served this week and I hope to be able to keep it in the next round."

World No. 5 Federer has lost to Anderson only once in six games at Wimbledon in 2018.

Anderson beat Australian Jordan Thompson 7-5 7-5 to reach the quarterfinals in Miami.

"Kevin is a great player, he has one of the best services in the game right now," said Federer.

"In America on hard ground, it's his cup of tea, but I'm playing well and I hope I can bother him."
