Marie Madeleine tells the often neglected story of the biblical figure, Mary Magdalene (Mara), an apostle of Jesus who left his traditional family appeal to join his movement. Phoenix plays the role of Jesus of Nazareth, with whom Mary establishes an intimate bond, a subject that has been debated for years by religious scholars and seems to be featured in this film (which Mara and Phoenix probably frequent in real life) help).
The trailer is composed of many inspiring orchestral charts and sheet music, suitable for a film directed by Davis, including the first feature film Lion was nominated for the best film in 2017. Indeed, before this film was delayed, he seemed to be supported as an Oscar contender, but the fall of the Weinstein society, which was originally to distribute it, has a film in purgatory. While it had opened in some international territories, an exit in the United States seemed unlikely until IFC Films recently resume its national rights and agrees to publish it in US theaters.
