The Algerian army chief said the presidency should be declared vacant, which is a new step in efforts to obtain the resignation of President Abdul Aziz Bouteflika, in difficulty.

The appeal of the chief of staff, Gaid Salah, therefore calls for the application of article 102 of the Constitution, which states that a president may be dismissed if he is unable to fulfill of his functions.

His address was carried by the television channel El-Bilad, while he was addressing senior officers of the army. Political observers believe that this could be the main reason why Bouteflika might be forced to resign.

"The solution that must be adopted to end the crisis and meet the legitimate demands of the Algerian people is the solution that guarantees the sovereignty of the constitution and the continuity of the state," Gaid Salah said.

The North African country has for months been angry at anti-government protests demanding Bouteflika's immediate resignation as he prepares to participate in the April poll.

Under increasing pressure, the President announced earlier this month that he would not be voting but would remain in office until his successor was chosen.
