While new speculations revolve around Jussie Smollett's Jamal's fate following the controversial legal victory of the actor, Empire raised the specter of another major casting start.
Midway through Wednesday's episode, Jamal's older brother Andre – played by compatriot Trai Byers – was finally diagnosed. "I have cancer – advanced stage of lymphoma 4," he solemnly informed his girlfriend, Teri. "I die.. [I have] a few months at best.
The twist on the screen comes 24 hours after the news was announced that prosecutors have dropped all charges against Smollett, accused of having simulated his own hate crime in January. At first, Fox claimed that the development was "gratifying", but it was before the reaction occurred. The mayor of Chicago, Rahm Emanuel, has been able to qualify the turn of events as "money laundering". a federal inquiry related to a potentially self-reported and hateful letter that was sent to the Empire set before the presumed January attack.
According to our sister site, Deadline, the network and the studio could choose to "reduce their losses" and make permanent the current suspension of two episodes of Smollett. Of course, that does not necessarily mean the end of Jamal. As TVLine reported in February, producers were already planning to revamp Jamal with another actor in Season 6, which has not yet been officially commissioned.
