ABUJA – The CAN, Christian Association of Nigeria, denied being subjected to any pressure to congratulate President Muhammadu Buhari on his victory in the presidential election last month.

President of CAN, Dr. Samson Ayokunle

CAN stated that, as a religious group, it remained apolitical and would congratulate and welcome everyone to whom the National Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) has proclaimed the election winner.

Recall that a source in CAN's national leadership, in a recorded conversation, told Vanguard that influential figures in the government were relentlessly persuading the church to pay a congratulatory visit to the president.

However, the president of CAN, Revd. Samson Ayokunle, in a statement issued Thursday by his media badistant, Bayo Oladeji, rejected the report, saying there was no such pressure on the church.

The statement reads: "Our attention has been drawn to a story suggesting that we are under pressure to congratulate President Muhammadu Buhari on his re-election.

"There was no iota of truth in history. Nobody put any pressure on the leaders of the Association to congratulate the President for his victory in the recent presidential election.

"It is a normal thing for the CAN to rejoice and congratulate the one who wins the presidential election in the country for its political neutrality. We have done this before. We did it in 2015 and we wonder why it should be different this year. "
