TTwo new imported cases of measles were detected yesterday, bringing to 25 the total number of cases, the Health Bureau (SSM) said in a statement.
The first case was diagnosed in a Filipino national who is a 27-year-old non-resident worker and a restaurant employee in the SAR, while the second is a 23-year-old local resident who works as a nurse in Kiang Wu. Hospital.
The first patient was in the Philippines from January 6 to March 15, while the last one visited Taiwan from March 3 to 9.
The MSS claimed that the local nurse working at the private hospital – where many cases of measles had been detected – was not contaminated at her workplace.
According to health authorities, the office has increased the number of measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccines to 15,000 doses. The first batch of 5,400 doses is expected next week.
The office also announced that more than 800 residents had applied for the vaccine in recent days, against an average demand of about 30 people a day.
For example, the office stated that residents wishing to apply for immunizations should make an appointment at local health centers, in person or by phone.
"This request has had a significant impact on the regular operation of the [health centers]since the procedures for applying this vaccine are [taking] longer than usual, "noted SSM.
However, children under two, child care staff and health professionals are exempt from the appointment.
The director of SSM, Lei Chin Ion, told reporters yesterday, on the sidelines of a committee of the Legislative Assembly, that there were enough vaccines for children and medical staff.
Lei promised that the office would adhere to World Health Organization guidelines regarding immunization. LV
