Nearly 5,000 people in Temple U get vaccinated during an outbreak of mumps

Nearly 5,000 students and faculty members took advantage of free vaccines injected at the Temple University of Philadelphia to try to contain an outbreak of mumps.

City health officials said more than 2,500 people were vaccinated on Friday at the second MMR vaccine clinic. The first clinic on Wednesday saw more than 2,200 people.

The health department of the city said Thursday, the number of confirmed and probable cases of mumps at school reached 108.

Students who have not been able to visit either clinic can still receive the vaccine at the Temple Student Health Center.

Mumps is a viral infection that involves swollen glands.

The mumps vaccine has been a routine part of infants for decades, but research suggests that the protection fades 10 years or more after the second dose.
