A 25-year-old bricklayer literally drank to death after participating in an alcoholism contest in the twin city of Sekodi-Takoradi.

Obeng Hamza, a 25-year-old bricklayer, reportedly collapsed and eventually died after taking part in an alcohol consumption competition in Sekondi-Takoradi.

The mason died at the Spring Mission Clinic after being rushed to the facility due to obvious excessive consumption of locally brewed gin.

Akpeteshie is a local Ghanaian gin distilled from the palm tree by farmers in general. For decades, it has been the beverage of choice for many low-income men and women and, since it is prepared in informal settings, the alcohol content is not measured.

The death of Hamza, according to Starrfm.com.gh, has plunged the community into a state of shock and grief, especially among the youth.

The owner of the pub, Kojo Isaac Eshun, said that the deceased and his friend Gyentia went to his bar on Friday, March 29, 2019, around 9 o'clock.

The pair ordered a full bottle of Akpeteshie.

The bar owner further revealed that the two people had consumed the drink in no time and had ordered for another tour, apparently competing with the one who gave up first.

He said that Hamza was suddenly weak and that he was beginning to sweat profusely, so he (Eshun) sounded the alarm for help.

But Hamza was declared dead at the clinic while his friend was responding to treatment.

A Hamza's brother-in-law said that the deceased had shamed the family and could not be buried according to Islamic customs and traditions. Islam prohibits the consumption of alcohol.

The body had not yet been transported to the morgue at the time of going to press.
