Two survivors of Hurricane Idai died and eleven others were injured when the brakes of an army truck responsible for providing food aid in eastern Zimbabwe were broken, an official said Friday.

The provincial spokesman for the defense forces, Major Exavier Chibasa, told AFP that the accident occurred Thursday in Skyline, in the cyclone-ravaged district of Chimanimani, where cyclone victims gathered to receive help.

"The vehicle lost its brakes while driving on a steep hill, there were people sitting on the sides of the road," Chibasa said.

"Unfortunately, two of them died and were killed, about 11 others were injured but not seriously."

The military is involved in transporting and distributing food and other relief supplies from cyclone victims Idai.

The storm hit at least 270,000 people and left 185 people in landlocked Zimbabwe, while more than 200 are missing. The United Nations Migration Organization (IOM), however, has estimated 259 deaths in Zimbabwe.

In neighboring Mozambique, at least 493 people have died and 1.85 million have been affected.

Heavy rains that caused floods and landslides damaged hundreds of houses, roads and bridges in the Chimanimani and Chipinge districts.

One school lost 30 students and several staff members while a local church lost a quarter of its congregation because of the hurricane.
