The PUC is expected to make a decision on the project in July. If approved, the existing 48-inch diameter aboveground pipe will be removed and replaced with a 36-inch underground pipe. Work on the $ 100-million project is expected to occur when Enbridge replaces Line 3 Pipeline, parallel to Line 4. Pending federal and end-state permits, the Company plans to replace Line 3. in 2020.
Sara Van Norman, a lawyer with the Lake Chippewa Lake Base Band, said the band was in favor of replacing this segment of Line 4.
"It's a standalone project that needs to happen … it's fixative and in the interest of my client," Van Norman told PUC Tuesday morning.
Built in the early 1970s, the Enbridge Line 4 Pipeline transports 796,000 barrels of oil per day from Alberta to the Enbridge Terminal at Superior. It is one of five Enbridge-owned gas pipelines that follow this corridor.
In a statement Thursday morning, Enbridge said the proposed move "makes land more accessible to members of the Fond du Lac community for traditional land uses, restores the hydrology of wetlands, improves safety and protects better the environment. "
Public meetings and a comment period on the project are expected to begin next month with a final CSP decision scheduled for July 7th.
