About half of the jobs of a Scottish law firm entered the administration could be saved through the transfer of its activities to other companies.
Morisons LLP, a legal partnership with offices in Glasgow and Edinburgh, was founded in the 1860s and employed more than 80 people.
Its activities in Glasgow will now be taken over by Blackadders and its activities in Edinburgh by Thorntons.
Administrators hope that around 45 staff positions will be saved in total.
No immediate dismissal is planned.
Lorna Jack, executive director of the Law Society of Scotland, said: "We are very sad to learn that Morisons has entered the administration.
"This represents the loss of a reputed Scottish law firm operating in Glasgow and Edinburgh."
Ms. Jack said significant changes in the industry as well as challenging economic conditions continue to impact law firms.
But she added, "We are confident that arrangements are being made to keep business customers as undisturbed as possible.
"We will work with businesses to help ensure a seamless transfer and provide advice and support to our members.
"Morisons customers should continue to contact their lawyer about any activity or transaction in progress."
Consultation of dismissal
The contracts, for an undisclosed amount, provide for the transfer of eight Morisons partners and 41 employees to Thorntons.
In addition, three partners and 30 staff members will be transferred to Blackadders.
Three other partners move to different companies.
There will be no immediate layoffs, but Morrisons and Thorntons will review their structures and staffing requirements.
A layoff consultation period with some former Morisons employees will begin next week.
