You did not really live until you worked as a zinger of David Lee Roth. "Can you make a drum sound, like in dance music? Everyone has their own version, "he asks a few seconds after our phone call. After some oomph-oomph-oomphshe cuts me short. "Okay, I can already tell your ethnicity," he laughs. The singer or, as he puts it so well, "the midnight boss when everyone is guilty" explains that he is in fact a lover of dance music. "That's why Eddie Van Halen and I have had so much friction over these decades," he says. "It's the only music I listen to."
It's no surprise that Roth made a surprise appearance at the Dutch Svengali Armin van Buuren tour at the Ultra Music Festival this evening in Miami, where the duo performed a remix of Van Halen's greatest hit, "Jump ". But when Roth ("Call me & David Lee & # 39;") and van Buuren got together to talk with Rolling stone about a week before the performance, in a LA recording studio for heavy and often hilarious conversation, they kept silent about how it would sound and how they would have presented it.
"The" jump "equals 128 beats per minute, 126 depending on the printing press your vinyl was made of at the time," says Roth. "What's the new track?"
"It's 130," van Buuren suggests. "I've sped it up a bit so that it matches the tempo of the rest of the songs in my set."
"It corresponds to the general blood pressure and adrenaline, serotonin, the mixture of alcohol-free homes that develops about 100 meters north of [Ultra’s] tries the city, "Roth joins.
Originally, Roth had co-written and recorded the contagious and optimistic success of the album in 1983. 1984. Seeing images of a suicidal man threatening to jump from a nearby building, he was told that someone in the crowd had to say to himself, "Go ahead, jump," and he refocused the lyrics on love as he wrote them in the background. Convertible Mercury. The song was released as a single just before Christmas 1983, a few weeks before the group sold its records. 1984 album. He finally spent five weeks at Number One in the United States and nearly six months on the American charts only; he also dominated the charts in Italy and Canada.
"I'm sure many of the kids I'm going to play probably do not know the original and the size of the song he was playing," van Buuren says. "Plus, it was easy to pick because I ask my audience to jump, and the song has a deeper meaning, and I hope the kids will hear it when they hear the song, when they start investing a little time in the history of the song. "
"It's visceral," says Roth. "It's a bit like when your dog knows you're intoxicated. In your gut, you know exactly what it's all about, and the [song’s] Deeper meaning is able to do something when you are a bit unsure. You know you want to do it, but that's why we give our kids lessons in ballet and music. We ask them to do dog shows and 4-H clubs. So you can escape, even if you are a little afraid. "
The remix came when a friend of van Buuren proposed to send him the recordings of the song. "I'm like," Yeah, bading yeah, "says the producer," I already knew the song when I was a kid.I think I was 6 when the track was a hit number one everywhere. I was just looking forward to having the stems, because I always thought: "And if you could have the energy of this song of 1982 and transfer it in 2019?" ". He sent it to Roth a few weeks ago and the singer loved it.
"The simple fact that David is open to such a thing is pretty big to me," says van Buuren.
"I agree with all that," Roth says. "This is the first step towards world peace if we can do it."

Rolling stone: Armin, how is David Lee involved in the performance?
Armin Van Buuren: I just sent it [to the Van Halen camp] and did not hear anything for two or three weeks. And suddenly, I received a call from Raymond van Vliet of Cloud 9 [Music]and he could not even breathe. It's like, "They love it, and maybe they even want to come to your show." I'm like, "What?" "David is a big fan of dance music." I'm like, "You're kidding me . really? I thought it was so cool, so that's how we got together.
David Lee Roth: Let's go back a bit. I'll go back to the day when the key to your hotel room came with a small plastic tag on which your number was inscribed. And it was a great ritual for when we would land in my rock band to play New York, because I would make sure to give the key to one of the road directors for that. She goes upstairs and makes sure to change the tape by 60 minutes. and turn it over, because I was recording WKTU, Stereo 92.
Van Buuren: Do you still have these tapes?
Roth I have two. You bet. I know you're saying, "Why not 90-minute tapes?" Well, because they could play somewhere around Dayton, Ohio. I was an expert at that. I would come back to be in the studio or wherever we play and there would be three 60-minute tapes recorded on both sides, and it should take me up to six months, depending on where we're recording. It goes back a long way.
So you already knew the music of Armin van Buuren?
Roth Of course. I know all or almost all of his work. Do you really want to go back? Van Halen relying as much on the European music hall as on the old Vaudois school [entertainment as rock]. That's where Freddie Mercury and Bowie come from. If you look under the hood, you will find a European engine in Van Halen. He adds perfectly.
Van Buuren: In fact, I think it's funny that there is also a lot of Dutch DNA in this song. And a Dutchman mixed it up. These are van Buuren and Van Halen. I thought it was pretty hilarious.
Roth Well, my God is a fierce and vengeful god of the Old Testament, but he also created the actors of the Borscht Belt.
David, can you describe how the remix looks like you, since our readers might not be going to Ultra?
Roth You want us to describe the sound? I would like to tell you about the time I sat down with my guitarist while I was in New York, lying on a wooden floor with a headset, discussing the blue color [on a monitor]. And I told him, "What do you think? Is the color I am looking for correct? "He says," A little less. "I said," Why not that? "He said," Too much. "I realized 20 minutes later that there was nothing in front of him. Do you really want us to discuss the sound?"
Just give me an idea of what Armin did to the song.
Roth Of course, it's like the first time you pbaded the pyramids. Do you remember that feeling?
I have not yet experienced this experience in my life.
Roth We will give you the "Stevie Wonder version", so to speak.
Van Buuren: I did not change the song too much. We recreated the Oberheim synth that was in the original. I just replay it completely compared to the original obviously. And as the original track is not in time, I had to spend a lot of time putting all the original rods in one click.
Roth Can I say something about why it's not at a specific time or in the grid? This is because we approached the celebration as a seasonal affair, not just for Christmas, but for all winter. So that's what you call "the Russian dragon". Your drummer is either rushin 'or draggin'. And that leads to … OK, now I'm pretentious and presumptuous here. How many guys in my job do I need to install a light bulb? One. We are waiting for the world to revolve around him.
Van Buuren: So at the beginning I created something for my DJ set, because I thought it would be cool to create it at Ultra. So at this point, it was not necessarily a radio song. It is made for a delirious public, young people of 18 to 22 years old who dance to the song of a song of which they do not even know that it was made was written in 1982.
Roth What time do you continue, it's nine o'clock?
Van Buuren: 9:20.
Roth You can write 9:15 on a t-shirt and all our colleagues will know what it means, right? It does not matter whether it's Jason Aldean or Armin here or myself. It does not matter if it's Ariana Grande. By the way, Kory, you're in the business. Which part is "Grande"?
The one just before "venti".
Roth Órale! If Gaga calls, I'm caught, okay?
Armin, did your brother Eller play guitar on this "Jump"?
Van Buuren: No, I would like him to do it. He is an extraordinary guitarist.
Roth Out of curiosity, what kind of guitar does he play?
Van Buuren: Well, he would not be able to speak if he was sitting on that chair, because he has a lot of respect for your origin. He knows all the albums of Steve Vai and Joe Satriani.
Roth The secret of all this music is that we adopted an international approach very early on. We did not discuss it, but let's start with óralelike the Latin influence. One of our most famous songs, and we are a power trio with a singer, is "Jamie's Crying". Today, I can tell you that it is Ricky Ricardo, r-r-rumba.[[[[Sing a part of the song]. It's not exactly heavy metal, unless we play for the lowriders, in which case, Armin, you have to change your evil methods, ese [[[[Laughs]. But this [Mexican feel] is the central part of "Dance the Night Away", OK?
David, what do you remember when you heard the music for "Jump" the first time?
Roth My music career is clbadic in many ways, not just in orchestra; Same thing for the Van Halen brothers. Lenny Bernstein was one of the posters I hung on the wall and she was way beyond the orchestra to Broadway. In that case West Side Story, which engenders a theater with similar views Yankees Damn. In Yankees DamnThe key song is "You must have heart". I learned this song word by word probably at the age of five or six. "Jump" is the answer to that.
What do you mean?
Roth I am a wise man Do you want me to have a heart? What is my first step? Well, first of all, you have to spend your time aiming and testing the essentials with both big toes. Sometimes there is no shallow part. And now I sound like the devil in Yankees Damn, right? "Test it with both feet, Dave. You can swim. Even with many of Van Halen's plays, you think it's Broadway; the talking part in the middle of "Is not Talkin" 'Bout Love' is like the collapse of West Side Story. "Now, I know Tony as I know myself … But the playground is the territory of the Jets.[[[[Sung]When you're a plane, you're a plane. "
And again, these are secret ingredients that we would introduce into our music, and that gives them a quality of translation that defies the genre. You can play on a ukulele. I heard, for example, "Bohemian Rhapsody" played by Jake Shimabukuro on a ukulele; it will strike you in the heart, it is guaranteed. You want tears in your eyes for the next scene? Listen to this. And I have trouble playing with 150 orchestras and provoking joy. It all depends on the translation. We tried to Van Halen to create this kind of music, and maybe in this case we have it.
What about when you heard the synth sound for the first time? It was very different at the time for your group.
Roth For me, that was not it. It looked like Shalamar[[[[Laughs]. Really. Listen to Shalamar's "Dead Giveaway" at about the same time. The dancefloors are like a straw machine. They really eat the material and impose a competitive quality that is probably closer to what happens in clbadical music. Popular music, everyone hears well. A world, a love.
In an orchestra, about once a year [they] go, "Hey, I'm the second president. I challenge you. And we both play the same song. Whoever plays it best gets the first chair, and it is competitive, and you win. There is urgency and rapid change in dance music. In most genres, it does not really happen.
When did dance music become the main music you listened to?
Roth My dad had just graduated from medicine and started his practice. We moved to Altadena, California. And this became part of the bus program. So, the very first album that I bought is a single dollar major Lance singing "Monkey Time". All my first friends were black and Spanish speaking. A few of them, you can always watch on the old go backs of YouTube Train souls. And I own two lowriders to date. It's to go to 7-Eleven. Ask Armin the following question.
Armin, are there any other Van Halen songs that you would like to remix or work with?
Van Buuren: Well, this song has tempo, which is very tempting. In fact, I do not do a lot of remixes, to be honest. It is very delicate to touch a song like this. And that's why I first sent it to the group first, because I did not want to step on my feet. I know the legacy of the songs. Touching a song like this is pretty scary because you know how many fans like the original.
Roth Armin, if I can …
Van Buuren: It's such a big song.
Roth They made the same sound when they changed the Batman costume.[[[[Van Buuren laughs.]
You get used to it.
Roth Clearly.
Van Buuren: It's a bit like getting a painting from Rembrandt or Van Gogh. You add colors to that; you would not do that. Fortunately, the original painting is still there, so it is not damaged. But if they want to see the new version, they have to come to see Ultra.
Roth See, I would take the chart and I would get Adobe Photoshop and I would explode this bader starting with the blues until your retinas burst. I'm going to work through this palette and it's going to take me four bading days and I'm not even going to finish with facial tones, buddy.[[[[Laughs]. Sorry, it's an art thing.
Dave, are there any other songs in your catalog that you would like to remix?
Roth They are all eminently remixable, but there are so many different kinds of "groove". And whether it's dubstep, chill, trance, etc., and yes, judge, I admit it. I know the difference.
If you talk about remix, I'm an extremist and I'm going to Korea. We are at Henson Studios in the heart of Tinseltown. Pharrell walks in these corridors and John Mayer records and repeats through the hallway; he lives here now in the studio. The Grateful Dead have been very, very good to him. God bless them. But no, there's a lot of Shakespeare happening here, musically and theatrically. And when you say "remix", it could be 15 different haircuts before the apéro time. Yes Yes Yes. You want me to say it 15 times?
Would you like to do something with "Panama"?
Roth [[[[at van Buuren]: Oh, he's trying to ask the question. They do it on CNN all the time. He just gave you the answer[[[[Laughs]. And yes, we think to do "Panama", we will let you know[[[[Laughs].
Van Buuren: Exactly!
Roth "Panama" is a groove. This has a four on the floor [beat]. Yes, some of them have a supersonic boogie, but if you know how to swing and jitterbug, and if you know something about Frankie Manning and his Lindy hoppers, you can catch him too. Go look at the Jitterbug scene in Hellzapoppin. If you are young and alert, try it.
How are you going to present "Jump" to Ultra Fest?
Roth This is not poetry, if I have to explain it to you, Kory. Come on, do you want me to roll it, smoke it, and get cancer too? Come on.
