A micro-version of the mini cow Dexter, a heritage breed native to Ireland.
Developed from a cow breed that has been ignored for decades due to its small size, this new type of beef takes advantage of its size to occupy a niche. "We have looked for ways to further reduce the environmental impact of meat consumption and we are delighted with this first," said the co-founder of Meatme, Victor Straatman. This new breed is a micro version of the mini-cow Dexter, a breed at the origin of the Ireland. This micro Dexter is about 10 times smaller than the size of a cow, which allows Meatme to produce micro steaks. "We are moving toward a future in which we are going to eat 8-gram steaks instead of the usual 8-ounce steaks," says Straatman.
The smallest ecological footprint also extends to the farm. "These micro-cows have many advantages," says farmer Meatme's partner John Johnson of Salmon Arm, BC. "They are about 30 percent more efficient, so they can graze longer in pastures, and they require less work, we will not have to haul so much in the winter and they are so easier to handle Which results in a happier life for the animal with little or no stress. In addition to the benefits of pruning, the meat of these micro-cows provides 31% additional protein. And with their 100% grbad diet, this gives a very healthy meat, rich in protein and omega-3.
Size also has logistical advantages, according to Straatman. "This beef is so small that we can easily send it to our customers in an isolated envelope, which means a significant reduction in delivery and packaging costs." And it is not just hot air. In fact, it is less hot air. Straatman: "We have done some preliminary studies on the methane exposure of these cows, and we know that animals are farting and these animals contain methane, which is essentially greenhouse gases. cows fart as much as a dog, which their greenhouse gas emissions per kg of meat are lower than those of chicken ".
