"Please, no proselytizing!" he told an audience of about 400 people who greeted the arrival of the pope by applauding and applauding, while hundreds of others gathered in front of the cathedral.
Christians constitute a tiny minority in Morocco, where 99% of the population is Muslim, with sub-Saharan Africans constituting a large part of the country's 30,000-strong Catholic community.
Islam is the state religion and the authorities insist on insisting on the "religious tolerance" of the country, which allows Christians and Jews to worship freely.
But Moroccans are automatically considered Muslims if they are not born in the Jewish community, apostasy is socially disapproved and proselytism is criminalized.
