Secretary General Johnson Asiedu Nketia of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ghana's largest opposition party, rejected the Electoral Commission's claims for a new voters list.
He says the time is wrong.
"This is not necessary," he told the newsfile TV show, Joy News's badysis journal.
Johnson Asiedu Nketia pointed out that the EC "got out better", true to the "proven tradition" of replacing the registry every 10 years, which should not be changed.
According to this tradition, the appropriate time would be 2020, a decade after the last register was compiled in 2012.
At this point, the number of ghost names that would have accumulated on the voters list could be considered important enough to require a new registry.
The NDC general secretary described the 2012 biometric voter register as holy grail, pointing out that by far it was a "vast improvement" over all previous registries.
He said he hoped the biometric register would be the "stop point" for the compilation of the registers. With the biometric features that ensure security and credibility, all that is needed is continuous recording and limited recording.
These processes will allow newly eligible electors to register.
It would be a waste of resources to buy biometric equipment, as the EC had done in 2012, but to abandon them after a few years to buy new ones for a new registry he put the finishing touches on to his position.
