Subject: NDC Minority Statement on the University of Education, Winneba Impasse

On March 29, 2019, the NDC minority in Parliament issued a press release regarding recent developments on the main campus of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW).

According to them, they are deeply worried because the closure of the school on March 14, 2019 is detrimental not only to students but also to academic work.

For the sake of clarity, I will highlight each of the points raised in their press release and deal with them one after the other.

Paragraph two of their statement reads as follows: "Our concern is also supported by the well-established positions adopted by the University Council, on the one hand, and by the local chapter of the Association of University Teachers. of Ghana (UTAG) -UEW and by EU students on the other hand ".

The statement of the NDC minority in Parliament reminds me of two words "" selective dishonesty and unbridled hypocrisy. "* There is no doubt that the NDC is a partisan political opportunist who is always in a hurry to score cheap political points. If the NDC had properly controlled his situation, he would have known that the illegal dismissal of some experienced lecturers was the reason behind the stalemate in which UEW was located.

The question is why should a reasonable person say that the constant interference of the NPP government in the administration of our tertiary institutions is at the root of the university troubles we are experiencing in these institutions, such as the that currently exists in the ETS and the previous one we saw in KNUST?

Is it not a well-known fact that the unrest we saw at KNUST was the result of horrendous violations of student rights and unfair treatment, coupled with the brutality suffered by security men on the campus? KNUST? Where can we see constant interference by the NPP government?

In their own press release, the NDC outlined the chronology of the events that led to academic unrest in the ETS. They began by signaling the dismissal of some of the speakers and then went ahead, in the logic of why these speakers should not have been fired.

If they were aware of their own statements, they would not have concluded that the continued interference of the "NPP government in the administration of the ETS is at the root of the turbulence we experienced a few weeks ago.

How can the unlawful dismissal of seasoned lecturers to satisfy the whims and whims of a vindictive VC that has forced students to go down the street can it be a matter of constant interference by the NPP government in the future? 39, STE administration?

In their own statement, they called on the VC and the chairman of the board of governors to resign for placing their personal interests above the fundamental interests of the university. The question we must ask them is this: if an administrator of an institution places his personal interest above that of the organization and there is chaos within the same organization, a government in power should he be accused of interference or responsibility?

Today, they are asking the VC and the chairman of the board of governors to resign on the basis of the following: (a) corruption (b) insolent malice (c) inability to resolve the current stalemate in the ETS .

If indeed the recent stalemate in the STE is the result of the "constant interference" of the NPP government, then why are they asking the chairman of the board of governors and the VC to resign, which is the surest way to restore peace in the ETS?

When it was clear that the stalemate in KNUST was the result of the autocratic posture of the VC, they strongly criticized this government for being lethargic when the problem degenerated into violent destruction of property. They never asked the VC to resign in order to restore peace to KNUST, as their interest was to mark a political point.
