ANKARA (Reuters) – The mayor of Istanbul, AKP (AKP) ruling party candidate, said he had won Sunday's election, but his opposition rival has stated that the declaration was premature.
After opening more than 98 percent of the polls, the AKP candidate and former prime minister Binali Yildirim said that his party had won. The opposition candidate, Ekrem Imamoglu, described Yildirim's statement as "manipulation" and said the votes were still counted.
Turkish broadcasters have stated that the latest count, with 98.8% of open ballot boxes, showed Yildirim a razor mine with 4,111,219 votes against Imamoglu's 4,106,776 votes.
