It is thought that the layoffs, the exact number of which is unknown, represent the biggest wave of staff cuts since the company removed some 15,000 jobs in 2016. At that time, the company was using a combination layoffs, redemptions and early retirement offers. At the end of last year, the company employed approximately 107,400 people.
Despite these reductions, the company is expanding elsewhere – with plans to build new plants in Oregon, Ireland, and Israel, as well as the third phase of its Hillsboro research facility, D1X. This facility alone is expected to create 1,750 new jobs in the region.
The layoffs also come just two months after interim CEO Robert Swan became permanent after a search for a long-running candidate for several months. Swan took office as CEO after the sudden resignation of former boss Brian Krzanich because of his "consensual relationship" with an employee.
