John Oliver loves professional wrestling and the fact that the WWE treats his athletes as "circus animals" broke his heart, as one wrestler said.
The comedian is struggling with working conditions at WWE which, he says, do not consider performers as independent contractors, even though they signed them with exclusive contracts.
The difficult situation gives the wrestlers so little financial protection and financial health that McMahon looks like a jerk, Oliver said. The wrestlers have an "extremely high" premature death rate, added Oliver, who compared the WWE rather unfavorably to another sports organization with battered alums.
"When you have lost the moral highs in favor of this bading NFL, you are morally clandestine," said the HBO animator.
