The growing number of cases represents on average more than 200 cases of new infections each day.

Although hundreds of people have been infected with cholera since last week, only one death has been reported so far, according to figures compiled by the ministry.

A mbad vaccination campaign is expected to be launched on Wednesday as authorities and aid workers strive to avoid an epidemic more than two weeks after a devastating cyclone struck Mozambique.

Some 900,000 doses of oral cholera vaccines were ordered and were expected to arrive Monday in the impoverished country.

"The vaccination against cholera begins Wednesday in Beira," said Ussein Isse, senior health official in Mozambique.

The central city of Beira is the most affected, with 959 cases out of a total of 1,052.

The city of more than half a million residents recorded 247 cases in 24 hours between Sunday and Monday morning.

Cholera is spread through drinking water or contaminated food and causes acute diarrhea.

Hurricane Idai killed more than 700 people across Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe, and hundreds of thousands of people were left homeless – many of whom were forced to use dirty water .

Experts warned that the destruction of drinking water sources and the lack of sanitation in Mozambique's overcrowded shelters create fertile ground for waterborne diseases such as cholera.

To control the outbreak, large quantities of drinking water and water purification units were delivered to the affected areas.

An advertising blitz to raise awareness of the cholera situation is also underway.
