The party of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has lost control of the capital, Ankara, in local elections after a 16-year setback in power.

The opposition is also ahead in the mayoral race of the largest city in Istanbul, the electoral commission announced.

Nationwide, the president's AKP-led alliance won more than 51 percent of the vote in the municipal elections.

But the AKP disputes the results in the capital and in Istanbul – considered the biggest electoral gain.

The vote, considered a verdict on Mr. Erdogan's plan, took place during a downturn.

The currency, the lira, has recently lost value and the economy has gone into recession during the last three months of 2018.
