Erdogan led a tough campaign by describing the vote of mayors and district councils as a fight for the survival of the nation, but the election became a test of AKP's support after the economic downturn that hit Turkey.
With more than 99 percent of the polls counted on Monday morning, Mansur Yavas, the opposition candidate for mayor of Ankara, was ahead of nearly 51 percent of the vote and the AKP by 47 percent. announced the Anadolu agency.
Erdogan, whose ability to win many votes in elections is unprecedented in Turkey's history, appeared more vulnerable as the economy was in recession for the first time in a decade, with a higher unemployment rate and double-digit inflation.
