DUBAI, April 2, 2019 (WAM) – The Dubai Autism Center has launched its Autism Awareness Campaign as part of the twelfth World Autism Awareness Day, celebrated each year on April 2.
Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), refers to a wide range of conditions characterized by challenges in social skills, communication and language, as well as a narrow range of interests and activities specific to the individual and conducted in a repetitive manner. According to the World Health Organization, WHO, it is estimated that one out of 160 children has an ASD in the world.
On World Autism Awareness Day, the international community is coming together. Hundreds of thousands of monuments, buildings, homes and communities around the world are light blue to pay homage to people living with autism. Autism-friendly educational events and activities take place throughout the month to increase understanding and acceptance and foster global support.
Since 2006, the Dubai Autism Center has been organizing events and activities that highlight the importance of community support for promoting social inclusion and inclusion of people with autism.
The Center's campaign is being held under the patronage of H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Board of Dubai. It includes several presentations in schools and public services with the aim of raising awareness and promoting a better understanding of the various challenges related to people with autism and the need for early intervention for them.
