Ali Haddad, one of the leading Algerian businessmen and one of the supporters of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, was arrested while he was trying to visit Tunisia, announced Sunday a source of Algerian security.

Haddad was widely regarded as a political tool by 82-year-old Bouteflika, who decided in February to run for a fifth term, despite health problems that provoked national protests in the North African country. .
The protesters also demand a change of government and the departure of Bouteflika's relatives, who use a wheelchair and have rarely been seen in public since their strike in 2013.
The reasons for his arrest were not clear and there was no official explanation for his detention.

Since 2014, Haddad was chairman of the Business Leaders Forum, the main Algerian employers' organization, but he resigned Thursday because of criticism against him for supporting Bouteflika.

This 54-year-old businessman is also the founder and CEO of ETRHB, a private construction company, owner of the USM Alger football club and two TV channels, Dzair News and Dzair TV.
