About 50 to 60% of women with bad cancer in the West have chosen to undergo conservative surgery, while over 88% of Chinese bad cancer patients would prefer that their bad be completely withdrawn because of fears of relapse and their limited medical abilities, according to experts.
However, removing all the bad can cause psychological damage and influence the personal and professional lives of the patients. With advances in medicine and the introduction of advanced treatments, the gap between Chinese and Western patients is expected to shrink, medical experts said in a program organized by China Anti- Cancer Association.
To encourage more patients to have the courage and confidence to keep their bads, a six-month national body painting tour began in the city. The tour also aims to raise awareness of bad cancer and those who are diagnosed.
The Run for Her Family program invites bad cancer patients to showcase the beauty of the human form through body painting and to share their experiences with other bad cancer patients.
Dr. Shao Zhimin of the Shanghai Cancer Center said that conservative bad surgery requires advanced treatment capabilities, experienced physicians, effective communication between patients and health professionals, and good postoperative rehabilitation capacity.
"But keeping bad has very positive psychological effects on patients with bad cancer," he said. "The introduction of more targeted drugs further improves the survival of patients, who can live longer and better."
The hospital has widely adopted conservative surgeries and bad reconstruction in patients.
He performed 1,632 conservative bad surgeries and 775 bad reconstruction surgeries last year, accounting for 26.8% and 12.7% of surgeries for bad cancer.
