A new type of nose job takes five minutes and uses an electric current

A new type of nose job promises to be quick and easy using small needles and an electric current.

Researchers say that the tip of the nose can be changed using electromechanical remodeling (EMR), which involves pbading an electric current through the cartilage (in this case, the cartilage of the nose) to make it collapsible.

Although the cartilage is soft and malleable, a surgeon can reshape it as he pleases. Then the current is turned off and the tissue is left to set for a few minutes.

He stated that the changes made by this treatment would be permanent and that the procedure would only take five minutes, making this new type of nose an alternative to rhinoplasty or the use of fillers.

In addition to being faster, this method would also avoid stitches and scars and could be performed under local anesthesia.

But before you get excited about the option of a quick nose adjustment, it should be noted that no human testing has yet been done.

Until now, researchers have tried only the EMR on animals, believing that this process could move the ears of a rabbit from vertical to another.

In addition, the EMR may only work on the tip of the nose because it affects the cartilage rather than the bones.

Dr. Hill and Professor Brian Wong, from the University of California, say that it takes a lot more research before you can use the EMR. They must determine if the process is at risk of adverse outcomes and whether temporarily changing the acidity of the tissues may result in undesirable effects.

Traditional rhinoplasty is usually performed under general anesthesia and can be used to change the size, shape and angle of the nose by removing or rearranging cartilage and bones.

In an open rhinoplasty, a cut is made on the skin between the nostrils, while in a closed rhinoplasty, tiny cuts are made inside the nostrils, without leaving visible scars.

It is a serious surgery that should not be taken lightly. The process can take up to three hours and most patients must stay in the hospital a few nights later before being sent with a splint, unable to breathe through their nose.

Side effects include a stuffy nose, swelling and bruising around the eyes and nosebleeds during recovery.

Risks include permanent breathing difficulties, heavy nosebleeds, impaired sense of smell, and risks of any surgery; excessive bleeding, infection, allergic reaction to anesthetic or blood clot.
