Joker Trailer: Joaquin Phoenix's movie on DC is a nightmarish smile

The first teaser of Joker's upcoming independent film, directed by Todd Phillips, brings Joaquin Phoenix's vision of the iconic villain to life.

Unlike previous versions of the Joker, this movie traces an original story for the character – the Joker before it's Joker, exploring Arthur Fleck's life as he descends from A small comedian to the crime clown prince. It is said that the film relies heavily on the influences of Martin Scorsese, especially the director's 1982 black comedy The king of comedy.

The first look at Joaquin Phoenix on the set was very Ordinary– look, although the images and subsequent costume tests revealed the most … wild look.

This trailer, however, tells us more about Arthur Fleck and suggests his possible descent into madness. We also see some of the supporting actors, as well as the 1980s version of Gotham City. Fleck wants to make the world laugh, but the world seems to be against him. It's time to hide behind a happy face!

If you're wondering where this Joker movie is with Wonder Woman, Shazam, Aquaman, Jared Leto's Joker and the rest of DC's current lineup, do not ask yourself that. It takes place in a separate universe and is part of DC's efforts to separate from the MCU and explore multiple versions of the same character.

Joker was released on October 4th.
