ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – The St. Louis Cardinals have announced that their 2019 home opener will be postponed until Friday, April 4th.

The first pitch was originally scheduled for 3:15 pm on Thursday against the San Diego Padres, but rain in the weather forecast was likely to occur when pre-game festivities could begin and possibly delay the first pitch.

The Cardinals and Padres had to have a day off Friday so no other match was hit. The Major League Baseball prepares for such situations by often planning a day off for the teams the day after their first home game.

There is rain in the forecast for most of the day Thursday, with thunderstorms. Dean DeVore, a meteorologist at Accuweather, tells us that the baseball weather is much better on Friday with a high of 66 degrees, mostly cloudy and with a very low probability of rain.

The Cardinals have released a full calendar of events for the morning and afternoon at Busch Stadium. They will remain unchanged for Friday's game.
