Parliament has introduced measures to address the mbadive failures of the new Ghana School of Law (GSL) professional law courses.
Legislators ordered GSL to make all scoring systems and examiner reports available to GSL students and faculty.
They again asked the Independent Review Committee (IRC) to consider holding additional examinations for all candidates referred in the 2018 Professional Law course.
Legislators also demanded that exams be conducted in time to ensure successful candidate registration this year.
Other directives also aimed to restore GSL's tagging costs from 3 000 GH ¢ to 500 ¢ GH; reopen the comment period to allow students who could not request it, and adopt an offsite note removal system to ensure quick re-marking of scripts.
Members made the decision Wednesday after the presentation of the report of the Committee on Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs on the petition of law students requesting the examination of the results of the new professional law course exams 2017 / 2018.
On March 5, 2019, a group of liberal professions law students submitted a petition to Professor Aaron Michael Oquaye, Speaker of Parliament, to obtain a re-examination of the new law vocational training course exams. .
Poor performance
Presenting the report of the Committee on Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs to Parliament, Committee Chair Ben Abdallah Banda said the commission was concerned about the deterioration of professional law students' results at the new course exams. professional law.
"The committee noted that performance had fallen sharply, from about 68 percent before 2016 to 12 percent in 2018, and feared that the trend would continue if urgent action is not taken to reverse the trend," he said. he declared.
Mr. Banda stated that the Committee had planned to engage all stakeholders in the legal education sector to consider Bill 2018 concerning the Legal Profession (Amendment) which had been tabled in the House of Commons. currently under consideration by the Committee.
In this regard, he said, the Committee had already received two GSL speaker proposals aimed at reforming professional legal education in Ghana and would review them with other proposals that could be submitted by D & C. Other stakeholders.
